Intertel and
You!
Intelligent people have special intellectual, emotional, and social needs which remain
with them throughout life. Intertel helps meet those needs for individuals with an
intelligence quotient at or above the 99th percentile, as measured on a standard IQ test.
Intelligent people need each other. Intertel members can enjoy the companionship of others
of similar abilities who share their ideas and insights, and who can understand some of
their frustrations. Gifted young people may discover new friends of their own age who
share their interests, and many find understanding and needed support from more mature
members.
Intelligent people like each other. High intellectual abilities are uncommon; gifted
individuals find that Intertel is a place to meet and be stimulated by others like
themselves. Many members find a unique fulfillment through Intertel which they can
experience in no other way.
A Few Facts about Intertel :
Since its founding in 1966, Intertel has grown to about 1,700 members in over thirty
countries. Members of the society come from varied cultures and all walks of life; the
single attribute they all share is high intellectual ability.
The society has three purposes:
-
to encourage meaningful intellectual
fellowship
-
to foster an exchange of ideas on any and
all subjects
-
to assist in research relating to high
intelligence
The society selects officers and regional directors who function as the Executive Board,
the governing body of Intertel. Many local groups meet regularly.
Because members of Intertel are so geographically widespread, communication is very
important. All members are encouraged to contribute to Integra, the Journal of Intertel, a
monthly publication. In addition, regional newsletters are also published periodically,
and many members correspond through computer on-line subscription services.
In 1985, the Intertel Foundation was formed. The Foundation is a separate nonprofit
charitable corporate entity with its own sources of funding. The Foundation sponsors the
annual Hollingworth Award Competition to promote educational and psychological research
studies of potential benefit to gifted and talented young people. The Competition is open
to institutions and individuals who submit proposals for publishable research projects.
The Award includes a cash grant. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible.
